Google has turned up the heat on its Android partners by controlling every aspect of software and hardware for its Pixel line. While it doesn't have every single feature you'd find in comparably-priced phones from LG, Samsung, HTC, or Sony, it does so many things right that it's currently the phone to beat.

Here are some of the things we like about the Pixel that we hope to see in future premium phones.

IT workers aren’t cogs in a machine

Are you part of a team that seems plodding, downtrodden or dejected? Do you manage a group prone to infighting among individuals or conflict between factions? Do you go to work every day filled with dread that you’ll be surrounded by people exuding negative emotions? If so, you’re not alone. Unfortunately, this describes far too many IT groups and project teams.

In my work helping both troubled and toxic teams, I’ve noticed that there are innumerable ways in which teams descend into dysfunction. It’s like the famous quote from Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina: “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” In part, that’s why there are so many troubled teams: Because there are an endless number of ways to get there, it’s hard to spot warning signs before the dysfunction is entrenched.

Achieving balance between work and home life is an ongoing challenge for professionals across industries, but it turns out the IT world is doing pretty well in helping to make it happen.

Roughly a third of the jobs listed in a new report entitled, "29 Best Jobs for Work-Life Balance (2016)" from recruiting site Glassdoor are within the IT realm, including the oft-celebrated position of data scientist at No. 3.

Several HR positions earned rankings on Glassdoor's list, including corporate recruiter in the No. 1 spot. Strategy manager took No. 4; substitute teacher and library assistant were also on the list.

Microsoft's Windows 10 beat a retreat last month, losing user share for the first time since its debut more than a year ago.

According to U.S. metrics vendor Net Applications, Windows 10 lost half a percentage point in user share during September, ending the month on 22.5% of all personal computers.

Windows 10 powered 24.8% of all machines running Windows: The difference between the user share of all PCs and only those running Windows originated with the fact that Windows powered 91% of all personal computers, not 100%.

September's decline was the first since Microsoft officially launched Windows 10 in July 2015, and the only since January 2015, months before when Microsoft offered only a preview to beta testers.

Ga-ga for goggles: Augmented & virtual reality bring the masses to Harvard

Wednesday was a big day for goggles in my life: I spent the afternoon at Harvard University’s Innovation Labs, where hundreds of people tried on the latest virtual and augmented reality headsets, then I watched the Boston Red Sox on TV that night as they donned ski goggles meant to keep champagne from spraying into their eyes as they awkwardly celebrated winning the American League East title despite blowing a game to the Yankees in the bottom of the 9th inning.

Coincidentally, the Red Sox baseball team was among the exhibitors showing off their virtual reality application, which enables fans to step into the batting cage to get a feel for what it’s like to be up close to David Ortiz while he’s hitting or David Price while he’s pitching.  The Sox offer their Samsung Gear VR experience both at Fenway Park and at community events, such as this Hubweek event that took place at Harvard Innovation Lab.

More than half of PCs don’t have Windows 10 AU yet, and no one’s quite sure why

Microsoft appears to be taking a conservative, go-slow approach to rolling out Windows 10’s Anniversary Update—enough so that less than half of all Windows 10 PCs have it more than six weeks after its official release.

Just 34.5 percent of all PCs are running Windows 10 version 1607, aka the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, according to AdDuplex, maker of a Windows 10 SDK for third-party app makers. The majority, 59.9 percent, are still running Windows 10 version 1511, also known as the Fall Update.

On August 2, Microsoft said the Anniversary Update would be rolled out “in phases,” with newer machines receiving the update first. That presumably meant that Microsoft was providing the update to those PCs that would likely have the fewest issues updating. What’s surprising is how slowly Microsoft is pushing out the AU to older PCs. But there are two likely culprits: Microsoft, and businesses, who want to ensure the update doesn’t break their own apps.

Verizon, which is finalizing its $4.8 billion purchase of Yahoo, said late Thursday it was notified of the massive data breach at Yahoo only in the last two days.

Verizon said it would evaluate what it will do next. In an emailed statement, the company acknowledged that it now has only "limited information and understanding of the impact" of the hack.

Yahoo earlier in the day blamed the attack on a "state-sponsored actor"without further elaboration and said its ongoing investigation indicates that information from at least 500 million user accounts was stolen.
