BrandPost: Disaster Recovery in a Virtual World

Business is in the process of going digital, and while that has profound implications for the entire organization—technology, processes and people—it is particularly relevant to data protection and disaster recovery. Most data protection and data recovery (DP/DR) tools currently in use were created before optimization for virtualized server environments, integration with new storage technologies and cloud services were widely considered, according to IDC.

And because backup is seen as a cost and an insurance policy, rather than as a business enabler, many organizations have under-invested in it for many years, which will impair IT managers’ ability to meet availability requirements for data and applications.

Cybersecurity firm offers users reimbursement for ransomware infections

Security firm SentinelOne is confident it can beat any of today’s ransomware — and is willing to put money behind that claim.

The company is offering a new service that will cover up to US$1 million in damages for any customers infected by ransomware.

SentinelOne is calling it the “Cyber Threat Guarantee” and treating it like an extended warranty that customers can buy starting Tuesday.

However, the company is convinced it won’t have to make any pay outs, said Jeremiah Grossman, its chief of security strategy. SentinelOne’s failure rate in stopping ransomware attacks is “way less than 1 percent,” he said in an interview.

Digital transformation. It's a reality that few companies today can escape. For some, the process is well underway. For many others, it's an oncoming inevitability. Whichever side of the gap your organization is on, you're probably facing a "security effectiveness gap" as the process brings more users, devices and applications online, creating an ever-expanding attack surface.

Cisco today moved to close that gap with an architectural approach to services and cloud-based security solutions that it says will make security more effective and simpler for customers.

"The problem we're trying to address is helping our customers to close the security gap," says Ben Monroe, senior product marketing manager, Security Business, Cisco. "There's a disparity between what our customers are trying to do, the tools they're being provided with to do it and the challenges the external threat landscape is pushing onto them."

BrandPost: CIO Interview with Shawn Edwards, CTO, Bloomberg LP

How are disruptive technologies like cloud computing, mobility, big data, and social media impacting your work as CTO?

Let’s focus on cloud. Bloomberg is actually a cloud service provider, and we have a very sophisticated internal cloud that helps my team move faster. It used to take us over a month to get new servers provisioned, but our cloud has dropped that down to minutes now. That lets us experiment more easily. If someone in my group wants to explore a new idea, they can just spin up 1,000 nodes and try it. It’s incredibly liberating.

How is that speed increase changing how you work with Bloomberg’s business units?
